Snow, salt, sand and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on your vehicle. Eight practical steps to protect your paint, glass and interior through an Edmonton winter — and what to do when spring comes.
Edmonton winters are tough on vehicles.
Snow and ice are obvious problems, but the bigger issue for your vehicle's appearance is everything that comes with them: road grime, sand, salt, moisture and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
A little preparation before and during winter can make spring cleanup much easier.
1. Protect the Paint Before Winter
Don't wait until the middle of January to think about paint protection.
Ideally, your vehicle should be thoroughly cleaned and protected before Edmonton's winter conditions arrive. Depending on your budget and how long you want the protection to last, options can range from shorter-term paint protection to a professional ceramic coating.
Ceramic protection creates a hydrophobic surface that can make winter contamination easier to wash away.
2. Wash Your Vehicle During Winter
One of the biggest mistakes is assuming there's no point washing a car because it will immediately become dirty again.
Winter washing isn't only about appearance. Removing accumulated road contamination prevents it from remaining on the vehicle for extended periods. Pay particular attention to areas where winter grime accumulates.
3. Don't Scrub a Dirty Car
If your vehicle is covered in sand and road grime, rubbing the surface can drag abrasive contamination across the paint. That can create swirl marks and scratches.
Whenever possible, remove heavy contamination with water before physically contacting the paint. The same principle applies when brushing snow from a heavily contaminated vehicle.
4. Protect High-Impact Areas
Edmonton roads can be particularly hard on front bumpers, hoods, mirrors and other forward-facing surfaces.
Ceramic coating can help with contamination and maintenance, but it isn't designed to stop rock chips. For physical impact protection, Paint Protection Film is the better solution.
Many owners choose PPF for high-impact areas and ceramic protection for easier overall maintenance.
5. Don't Forget the Interior
Winter doesn't stay outside.
Snow, moisture, salt and dirt are constantly carried into the vehicle on boots and clothing. Good winter floor protection helps considerably, but contamination can still build up around carpets, seats and trim. Allowing wet carpet to remain dirty for months can also contribute to unpleasant odors.
A thorough interior detail after winter is one of the best times to reset the cabin.
6. Clean Your Glass Properly
Visibility matters even more during Edmonton winters.
A contaminated windshield can produce glare when driving toward headlights or low winter sun. Cleaning both the exterior and interior glass can make a surprisingly large difference. Glass protection can also make water and contamination easier to manage.
7. Be Careful With Automatic Brush Washes
Automatic washes are convenient, especially when it's extremely cold outside.
However, brushes that repeatedly contact many dirty vehicles can contribute to swirl marks and fine scratches. If preserving the paint finish is a priority, touchless or careful hand washing is generally preferable.
8. Do a Proper Spring Detail
When winter finally ends, a quick wash doesn't always remove everything accumulated over several months. Spring is an excellent time for:
- Thorough exterior cleaning
- Interior detailing
- Removal of winter contamination
- Paint inspection
- Exterior decontamination
- Paint correction when needed
- Reapplication or upgrading of protection
This gives you an opportunity to assess what happened to the vehicle over winter and prepare it for the warmer months.
