Rock chips, winter sand and Henday gravel — what PPF actually protects, how Partial Front ($799) to Full Vehicle (from $4,499) coverage works, windshield protection film, and PPF vs ceramic coating explained honestly.
Edmonton roads are hard on paint. Gravel on the Anthony Henday, winter sand and salt, construction debris on the Yellowhead — every season leaves its mark in the form of rock chips, sandblasted hoods and pitted bumpers. Paint Protection Film (PPF) is the only product that physically stops that damage. This guide explains what PPF is, how coverage levels work, what it costs at our studio, and how to decide what your vehicle actually needs.
What Paint Protection Film actually is
PPF — often called a "clear bra" — is a transparent urethane film that bonds directly to your factory paint. It is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch) and works as a sacrificial layer: gravel, sand and road debris hit the film instead of your paint.
We install Veltik Clear PPF PRO 60, a premium 7.5 mil clear gloss film. Two properties matter most to owners:
- Self-healing surface. Light scratches and swirl marks in the film's top coat disappear with heat — from the sun on a summer day or warm water in the garage. The film keeps looking fresh without polishing.
- Optical clarity. A quality film is virtually invisible on healthy paint. It does not change the color, and the gloss version actually deepens the shine slightly.
What PPF does that nothing else does: it absorbs physical impacts. Ceramic coatings, waxes and sealants are chemical layers — excellent for gloss and washing ease, but a stone at highway speed goes straight through them. If rock chips are the problem, film is the answer.
How much coverage do you need?
Coverage is a budget-versus-risk decision. Here is how we structure it:
Partial Front — $799
The high-impact minimum: front bumper, the first 24 inches of the hood, partial front fenders, side mirrors and headlights. This is where the majority of Edmonton road rash lands. A smart choice for city-driven vehicles and leased cars.
Full Front — $1,499
The daily-driver standard and our most popular level: front bumper, full hood, full front fenders, side mirrors and headlights. No seam lines across the middle of the hood, no unprotected strip above the partial film. If you commute on the Henday or drive to Calgary regularly, this is the level we recommend.
Full Front Plus — $1,899
Everything in Full Front, plus A-pillars, the roof leading edge strip and door cups. The roof edge catches debris thrown by trucks ahead of you, and door cups are scratched by fingernails and rings every single day — small areas, but they age a car fast.
Full Vehicle — from $4,499
Every painted exterior body panel wrapped. The final price depends on your vehicle's size and complexity, which is why we quote it after a short in-person assessment rather than promising a flat number online. Book a free 30-minute assessment visit from the calculator, or send a quote request — no payment is taken for an unconfirmed amount.
Individual panels — from $25
Every panel is also available individually in our online calculator: hood, bumpers, fenders, mirrors, headlights, doors, rocker panels, pillars, roof, trunk, door cups, door edges and more — down to fog lights and the fuel door. For parts that come in pairs (fenders, mirrors, doors, pillars) you can choose driver side, passenger side or both. If you remove a panel from a package, the package price adjusts proportionally — you never pay for coverage you didn't get.
Don't forget the windshield
Alberta is famous for cracked windshields, and replacements on modern vehicles with cameras and sensors are expensive. Alongside body PPF we install Veltik SEC-H Windshield Protection Film — a 6.5 mil exterior glass film with high optical clarity and a hydrophobic surface that helps water clear quickly in rain.
Honest expectations: no film makes glass unbreakable, and we will never promise it stops every chip or crack. What it does is add a replaceable sacrificial layer that helps against minor road debris damage and everyday abrasion. Pricing is simple: $399 for sedans and coupes, $449 for small SUVs and crossovers, $499 for large SUVs and $549 for pickup trucks. Oversized or complex glass is quoted individually. It can be added to any PPF package or booked on its own.
PPF vs. ceramic coating — do you need both?
They solve different problems:
- PPF — physical impact protection (rock chips, scratches, road debris).
- Ceramic coating — chemical protection and looks (gloss, hydrophobicity, easier washing, UV and chemical resistance).
Many of our clients combine them: film on the high-impact front end, ceramic coating over the film and the rest of the paint for gloss and easy maintenance. The two are fully compatible — ceramic can be applied on top of PPF. If you can only choose one, choose based on your enemy: physical damage → PPF; washing effort and shine → ceramic.
What installation looks like at our studio
Every install follows the same discipline:
1. Decontamination wash and inspection — the paint must be surgically clean; anything trapped under film stays visible.
2. Computer-cut or hand-fit patterns matched to your exact model.
3. Installation in a controlled, dust-managed studio — film installs are sensitive to environment, which is why we don't do mobile PPF work.
4. Post-install check — edges, corners and high-stretch areas inspected before handover.
PPF installs are scheduled individually because a Partial Front and a Full Vehicle are very different jobs. When you book online you pick a preferred date, and we confirm the exact drop-off time and duration personally.
Maintenance: keeping the film invisible
PPF is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance:
- Hand wash or touchless wash; avoid aggressive brushes at film edges.
- No abrasive polishes on the film.
- Minor swirls in the film self-heal with heat — park in the sun or pour warm water.
- A ceramic coating on top makes washing even easier and adds gloss.
The bottom line
If you drive in Edmonton, paint damage is not a question of "if" but "when". PPF is the only upgrade that physically prevents it, and it pays for itself at resale or lease return. Prices above are in Canadian dollars before GST, and our online calculator shows the exact price for your vehicle in about a minute — pick your year, make and model, choose a package or individual panels, add windshield protection if you like, and book a preferred date online.
